Gather Your Thoughts
- Type of work environment. Do you like fast-paced or quiet or something in between? Take some time to think about the kind of job you want--and it's okay if you don't know! Some jobs are fast-paced and active and you earn tips, some require you sit and staff a desk, some keep you busy working with kids outside. There are benefits and drawbacks to all environments, so think about what you like and talk to people you know who have worked as teens to get their perspective.
- Transportation. One of the most important things about a job is considering how easy it will be to get there. Will you get a ride, walk, ride a bike, ride the bus? This will impact where you look for a job, and employers will want to know you have a plan in place.
- Year Round or Seasonal. If you're looking for a summer job, start your search before summer begins. Businesses want to have staff trained by end of June, so start looking in April. Some places like the Racetrack and Recreation Department host job fairs, sometimes as early as February, so check their websites regularly to keep up with their updates.
Gather Your Stuff
- Working Papers. Get working papers from your school Guidance Counseling office. Check here for a list of what you need or ask your guidance counselor.
- References. Talk to adults who know you and ask if they will be a reference for you. Have contact information on hand for 2-3 people who would serve as references for you. Teachers, coaches, former employers, neighbors and family friends you've done work for are all great options.
Get Going!
- Apply online. Most places will direct you to their website to apply and will follow up with an email, so don't forget to check that regularly.
- Visit places in person. There are many businesses concentrated in downtown Saratoga that staff up heavily at the beginning of summer to prepare for track season. If this is a convenient location for you, consider walking around and checking out businesses that look interesting to you and asking about a job in person. Bring a folder with all your information so you're prepared to fill out applications on the spot.
