Dear NYer: Home

This guide will give you the information you need to participate in Dear NYer

How it Works

Dear NYer is a program to connect letter writers from across the state and beyond.  Reach out to a stranger and let them know what life is like in your neck of the woods!

All participant addresses will be kept confidential and not shared with other participants.

Once of you've written your letter, simply send it back to the library and we will match it and send it off to another letter writer.  The only thing the letter recipient will get is your first name and letter - no contact information.

See the PARTICIPATE! box below for more information on what to do and where to send your letter.

Need ideas to get you started?  Check out the LETTER PROMPT IDEAS box on the right.

About This Project

This project was inspired by one of our extraordinary community members, Sue Johnson.  She first brought the idea to the Library about a year ago after having participated in a similar program from Oregon Humanities called, Dear Stranger.  Since then, we've been working through the details to make this project happen.  Especially now, we thought we could all use a little extra connection.  And what better way to do that then to get a letter!

Letter Prompt Ideas

Here are some letter prompt ideas to get you started with your letter!

Tell the recipient a little bit about:

  • What your favorite thing is about living where you live
  • What you see on your morning, afternoon or evening walks
  • What your favorite type of food to make or take out is
  • Do you have a pet?  What is something funny or endearing your pet does?
  • When COVID is over, where would you like to travel to?
  • Do you have any hobbies that you really love?  Write about them
  • Do you have a favorite NYS landmark that you like to visit?
