School Readiness Skills

This guide identifies some of the important skills for children to master before entering Kindergarten along with a list of picture books to help with the learning of that skill.

Welcome to this LibGuide! Here, you will find skills children need to master before entering kindergarten. You can help children learn these skills by modeling them, reading educational picture books, and playing games that encourage learning. 

The kindergarten readiness skills are divided into the following subjects: "colors & arts", "letters", "math skills", and "rhyme."

COLORS & ARTS: 1. Identify basic colors 2. Sort objects 3. Hold a crayon correctly when coloring

LETTERS: 1. Identify each letter and sing the alphabet song! 2. Recognize upper and lowercase letters 3. Recognize their printed name

MATH: 1. Count to at least 10 2. Distinguish letters and numbers 3. Say how many objects are in a small group 4. Recognize and name basic shapes

RHYME: 1. Recognize simple rhyming pairs 2. Be able to recognize and sing popular nursery rhymes
