How to Make a Gift Bow
First, gather a pile of wrapping paper scraps. These can be gently-used pieces from opened gifts or trimmings left over from wrapping.
The only tools you will need are scissors, a ruler or other straightedge, a pencil, and tape (rolling craft adhesive works very well).
Begin by trimming down your scrap of paper if it is large. On the back, mark off ¾" strips in the following sizes: three 11" pieces; three 10" pieces; two 9" pieces; and one 4" piece.
Cut out all of the strips. If you are making multiple bows, you can cut out many strips to start and proceed assembly-line style.
Line up the sets of strips by size to keep strips of the same length separate for each layer.
Starting with the largest size, loop the first strip around by both ends as shown. Overlap by 1" in the center and secure with tape or other adhesive.
Repeat the looping process for the remaining seven longer strips. For the smallest strip, make a simple "O" ring for the center of the bow. Be sure to keep them separated by size so it is easier to determine which loops belong to each layer.
Again beginning with the largest pieces, arrange three looped strips so their middles are together and the tips are spaced evenly around the edge. Secure each to the next in the center to create one layer.
Repeat this step with the next two sizes of loops to create all four layers (the small loop stands alone and will become the center of the bow).
With tape or other adhesive, secure all the layers together in the center. Start with the largest layer on the bottom and build up to the smallest single ring in the center. Rotate the layers as needed so the points sit nicely between those of the layer below.
Repeat with as many scraps of wrapping paper as you want to use up! Experiment with different sizes and patterns of paper (or various kinds of lightweight craft paper or magazine pages, etc.). To make extra large bows, add one or two layers to the bottom using 1" strips (add an additional inch of length for each 3-strip layer). To make tiny bows, remove a layer of loops and use shorter ½" strips. Or, try mixing and matching papers between layers!
