Crafts for Bibliophiles: A Horse, of Course!

A collection of directions/templates for making your own creative bookmarks and other book crafts at home.

To make this bookmark, you will need to print the Horse Template sheet below. You will also need black yarn, cardstock, scissors, and tape or craft glue.

Directions

1. First, decide how long you want your bookmark to be. The body block will be the majority of the length inside the book and can be anywhere from 6" - 8½" long. The top of the head does not add inner length, as it will "peek out" from the top of the book.
NOTE: The tassel attachment string will add an additional ½" - 2" of length inside the book and ¼" of the body block will be used to attach the head.

2. Cut extra length from the blank side of the body block if desired and cut out the head (see image sheet).

3. Make a bend in the cardstock approximately ¼" from the blank end of the body block (see image sheet).

4. Glue (or tape) this ¼" section to the back of the horse head, lining up the fold line at around the middle of the eyes. The horse head should be about the same width as the body block where it attaches (see image sheet).

5. For the tassel, first cut a piece of yarn two times the length of the string you want to use to attach the tail plus 1".
For Example: If you want a 2” string for a longer bookmark, cut a piece of yarn measuring 5” --- (2x2)+1=5

6. Cut another small piece of yarn measuring approximately 1½" - 2" to tie around the top of the tassel.

7. To make the tassel, gently wind the yarn all the way around four fingers eight times, or as many times as the remaining yarn will allow.

8. Thread the attachment string through the wad of looped yarn and tie it together. Use the smaller string to tie the tassel near the top (see tassel sheet).

9. Cut through the yarn loops at the end opposite the knot (see tassel sheet). Trim them to be even if desired or leave them slightly uneven as in the photo.

10. Tie together the loose ends of the attachment string and thread through the hole punched in the body block. Loop this over the tassel and pull through to tighten. Trim any loose ends as needed.
